Chris Allen

Technician

By day I am mild mannered Nexus Alpha technician, providing onsite support and maintenance, assembly of circuit boards and hard ware, and I am also involved in research and development of new equipment. I joined in late 2004 and have a mechanical engineering background. Recently I have mastered the rudiments of Solidworks 3D design software and have designed the ‘Helios Lite’ LCD Display.

By night I am one half of a punk-trash-folk-skiffle-blues-a-billy duo. We have released two vinyl albums on Hangman Records, and two CDs on Damaged Goods. Used to be serious about it, now a hobby.

HERMES

HERMES is the core component in the range.  A powerful fully featured computer built to our own specification and to exacting standards and featuring all necessary components in one integrated very low-power-consumption module.

HERMES Front 001pm

HERMES, with its on-board software PROMETHEUS, has been designed from the ground up to provide all the functions required in a transport information system.  Naturally this includes an extremely flexible output engine which can format the incoming data for any connected output, whether it is LCD, LED, audio or custom system, or indeed any combination of them.

But HERMES goes well beyond this: its integral RS485 diagnostics and control bus (called Argonet) allows HERMES to control any number of attached subsystems and to monitor their functions. Indeed it can also monitor anything else to which it is attached.

Key attributes include:

• Low power processor
• No hard drive: all embedded software is designed to run from solid state memory
• ArgoNet: On board diagnostics and diagnostics bus (for external elements)
• On board graphics management
• On board GPRS module (RS 232 interfaces cater for alternative devices)
• Internally battery backed (short term for fault alerting and safe shutdown)
• Externally battery backed for minimal disruption
• Multiple output capability (may drive several output devices)
• IP 65 rated enclosure
• Small size
• Tested to operate from -20 to +50 ambient without cooling of heating

Connectivity will be via any current mechanism including over GPRS using our own industry leading remote access software. Alternatively HERMES systems have RS232 and RS485 ports suitable for use with other radio modems such as PMR.

HERMES Back 001pm

HERMES’ unique bespoke design ensures that the systems are optimally configured to protect critical elements and reduce service loss.  In addition, its diagnostics and reporting capabilities ensure that operators can have very high levels of confidence in system function – for example HERMES can report a fan which is showing subtle signs of bearing wear long before the fan expires and its host system fails.

HERMES may be provided on its own, offering a compact unit which may be integrated into other systems. It is, with PROMETHEUS software. ideal for use as an M2M platform.

PROMETHEUS

The Prometheus software suite embedded within HERMES will be extraordinarily versatile:
• Multiple data input streams will be accepted (singly or in combination) e.g. NADP (Nexus Alpha Data Protocol), EDF, ADP, Centurion etc
• Timetable, Real Time and Exception/Disruption data
• Multiple output devices may be run from one machine (LCD, LED, audio, etc)
• Video feed-through with schedule control

HERMES (with PROMETHEUS) will support an extensive array of diagnostics technology:
• Self diagnostics (monitors system status, communications, power levels, temperature etc)
• Diagnostics of attached systems via Nexus Alpha ArgoNet monitoring system
• Automated reporting to Nexus Alpha Monitoring Centre
• Automated status alerts via e-mail, SMS, fax
