Kevin Barraclough

Software Engineer

I am a programmer who started off working on Internet related projects way back in 2000, then as my skills grew, I was able to branch off into other areas.  I now work on Tyrell related projects as and when they come up.  I am currently helping to do some extensive testing on a new version of Tyrell.
Doing something that could be considered geeky (programming computers) one might expect me to do something "cool" outside of work, but I am just as geeky there with an interest in Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and war-gaming.  I do play guitar (badly) in an attempt to be non geeky :P.  I am married to Michelle who is a saint to put up with me.

Environmental Policy

This details the areas where by careful control, Nexus Alpha is able to limit its impact on the environment. Our area of business is largely in the supply of technology solutions to public transport operators. These systems are used for information distribution to customers in order to improve customer use and perception of public transport. We are very strong supporters of the use of public transport.

General Statement of Policy

Nexus Alpha Ltd has a general policy of limiting, and where appropriate minimising the environmental impact associated with our standard trading. This is broadly achieved by adhering to guidelines regarding the following:
• Recycling
• Power Consumption
• The Use of Personal / Company Vehicles vs Public Transport
• Purchase of Environmentally Friendly Equipment
• Disposal of General Waste
• Packaging
• Supplier Assessment

It is the job of everybody at Nexus Alpha to assist in the promotion and pursuit of these objectives.

Policy Statements

The following areas are identified specifically as part of this environmental policy.

1 Paper Use and Recycling

Printing documents should be avoided where possible.  In general computer back-ups are adequate.
Scrap paper should be retained for re-use or collected for recycling.
Paper recycling should be implemented wherever practicable.

2 Power Consumption

Lighting should be controlled and equipment that does not have to remain on 24 hours a day should generally be turned off when the offices are unstaffed as appropriate.

3 The Use of Public Transport

Wherever practical public transport should be used as an alternative to using either a personal or company/hired vehicle.  Rail is environmentally most efficient and frequently faster.

4 Purchase of Environmentally Friendly Equipment

Computer systems and printers with low-power should be chosen in preference where possible. Low power lighting should be used where appropriate and care is taken in programming the office heating to reduce wasted energy.

5 Disposal of Functional Computer Hardware

Where systems are disposed of that remain functional they should first be offered to one of the computer refurbishment organisations such as CyberArk (01634 409712).

6 Disposal of Other Computer Hardware and Any Hazardous Waste

Any waste deemed hazardous or likely to contain hazardous materials, including all batteries, must be disposed of through a recycling facility.  Such waste is collected at Ashford House and should be taken to:
AWARefiners (www.awarefiners.co.uk)
Nexus Alpha Ltd is registered with The Environment Agency: Reg No: NCF852. This code is required for any such disposal.

7 Disposal of General Waste

This should always be carried out in line with the policy of the appropriate council body that manages waste disposal at our office sites. Council collections are preferred, or where needed, only licensed contractors are used for waste disposal.

8 Packaging

Packaging should be re-used wherever appropriate. This means retaining padded enveloped and equipment boxes for possible re-use.

9 Supplier Assessment

New suppliers that we choose to work with should be asked for their general policy statement on the environment.
